Alternatives to Cow's Milk

Find the best non dairy milk for you

If you have a sensitivity to dairy or lactose, you probably don’t drink much cow’s milk. So what should you do if you want to have a bowl of cereal or make a recipe that calls for milk? Luckily, there are lots of other non-dairy and lactose-free milks on the market today, and usually you don’t even have to go to a fancy health food store to find them. In this article we will talk about the most popular alternative milks that are available, as well as the pros and cons for each of them.

Soy milk

Soy milk is a very healthy alternative to cow’s milk that is made with water and soybeans. This is the most common alternative to cow’s milk, and is probably the most popular. Soy naturally has a lot of protein, but soy milks are often fortified with other vitamins such as calcium and vitamin D so that it has all of the same nutrients as cow’s milk does (without the dairy!). However, many soy milks come without added nutrients, so if you want to have those nutrients in your diet make sure you read the ingredients on the soy milk you choose.

It’s possible to make your own soy milk, but it can be a tedious process. With all of the great soy milks available in stores, it usually makes more sense just to buy one that’s already made. Soy milks are usually the most economical choice of all of the alternative milks as well.

Rice milk

Rice milk is great for those who have sensitivity to soy as well as to dairy. Rice milk is made with water and rice, and is also often fortified with other vitamins and minerals. It is known for having a more watery than creamy texture, so if you are used to drinking low-fat cow’s milk this could be a good choice for you. However, rice doesn’t have much protein, so this milk doesn’t either. If you are looking for a milk that will give you protein, it’s a good idea to choose a different one.

Almond milk

Almond milk is a really great alternative to cow’s milk. This milk is made with ground almonds and water. Since it’s made from almonds, a protein-rich nut, you know you are getting a bit of protein naturally with your milk. Most almond milks are fortified with vitamins and minerals as well.

It’s also pretty easy to make your own almond milk at home. Just grind together pre-soaked almonds and water in a blender, and then pass it through a cheese cloth. Voila, you have your own homemade almond milk!

Coconut milk

While coconut milk contains about the same amount of saturated fat as cow’s milk, it still is a very healthy alternative as it contains protein and lots of other vitamins.

Oat milk

Oat milk is made from oats, water, and some other grains and beans. This kind of milk contains lots of protein, as well as vitamins and minerals, naturally. Because of this, you won’t have to worry about buying the fortified kind.

If you have a soy allergy, make sure to read the ingredients list because sometimes oat milk is made with beans and that can include soybeans. Also beware if you have a gluten allergy, because oats are often processed in the same factories that process wheat ingredients.
