Tips for Having a Great Workout and Not Straining Yourself

Many people believe exercise is strictly a good thing. Depending on the frequency and type of exercise, it could actually have the opposite effect. Certain exercises can actually do more harm than good to your body. Also, practicing safe techniques at the gym will also reduce the chance of injury or harm.

Vigorous activities such as running, sprinting, or intense weightlifting may actually be causing harm to your body. Not every person is equipped to handle vigorous exercises, while others are. For some people, such exercises can lead to heart attacks, damage to tendons or ligaments, causes extreme exhaustion, and depletes your body of vital nutrients. It’s important to listen to your body and know your limit.

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when you’re at the gym to help prevent any injuries or health problems. First, use your common sense. Do not push yourself past the point of exhaustion where you’re on the brink of passing out. You may have burned a few extra calories, but you’re depleting your body’s sources of nutrients and electrolytes, and could become significantly dehydrated. Second, go at your own pace and do not compare yourself to others. Do what you need to do to stay healthy and fit, and don’t compare your exercises to those of others. Third, try to involve your entire body in your exercise routine, and don’t just stick to running or weight lifting. Try to get outside as much as possible and exercise in the fresh air. Flexibility is just as important as strength and endurance, and stretching and deep breathing is vital. Lastly, choose exercises that are not overly strenuous on your body, such as walking, swimming, or biking. These exercises are less associated with injuries or health problems that arise from exercising.

Now that you’ve learned how to pace yourself with exercising, it’s also important to understand basic gym safety to prevent any other injuries from occurring. First, be careful where you step. People leave water bottles, dumbbells, and yoga mats all over the place, so be mindful about where you are walking. Second, it’s important to gradually increase the speed of the treadmill once you’re already on it. Don’t hop on it when it’s going 6 mph, because that’s a recipe for disaster. Gradually go from a walk, to a jog, to a run. Third, warm up! Don’t just start sprinting at full speed. Take a warm up lap to get your heart rate up, and stretch your entire body. This will reduce the chance of pulling or straining any muscles. Also, gradually building up to your maximum speed when you’re running, allows for the blood flow to be redirected to the muscles being used, allowing them to be more pliant and lessen the risk of straining them. Fourth, wear comfortable clothing and proper footwear. Wear shoes that provide enough support and cushion for your exercises to decrease the chance of injury. Fifth, remember to breath. Many people tense up when exercising, so mindfully allowing your muscles to relax and to breath allows for a better workout by getting more oxygen to the muscles. Lastly, take a day off! Don’t overdo it. Take time to allow your body to recover and relax. Injuries can occur from overuse too.
