Healthy Substitutions for Unhealthy Recipes

Make your unhealthy foods healthier!

Some recipe are so complicated to make, it’s difficult to find the energy to buy all of the unique ingredients required to make them! However, some recipes are so unhealthy, you can’t justify the unnecessary calories, no matter how tempting they seem. Luckily, there are some easy ways to make unhealthy recipe much better for you, simply by substituting some other common ingredients. Here are some examples.

Honey

Honey is a much healthier alternative to sugar. Honey tends to be much less processed than sugar, and has much more health benefits than sugar does. Honey has been shown to prevent cancer and heart disease, reduce ulcers, and also helps with throat irritation and cough.

Artificial sweeteners

If you are counting calories, artificial sweeteners can be a life saver for you. They are calorie free, and can be substituted for sugar in any recipe. However, there are some studies that link aspartame, the main ingredient in most artificial sweeteners, to other health problems. Consult with your doctor before you add a lot of artificial sweeteners to your diet.

Herbs

Do you put a lot of salt in your food? If so, you should start to use herb instead. Most Americans consume way too much sodium, and adding salt to the food you cook adds even more. Try using herbs such as cumin, basil, parsley, oregano, and pepper to your food instead of salt. You will get all kinds of different flavors, but will have a lot less sodium in your diet, ultimately improving the health of your heart.

Reduced fat milk

Many soups and sauces call for heavy cream. Cream is very high in fat and calories, which can be detrimental to a healthy diet. Try using reduced fat milk or half and half instead of heavy cream. The recipes won’t lose much flavor, but you will cut down on a very unhealthy ingredient. Your gut will thank you!

Stronger cheese

Most recipes that call for cheese call for way too much. By using a stronger cheese in place of a mild cheese, you can cut down on the amount of cheese you have to use in the recipe. For example, in a recipe that calls for 1 cup of shredded provolone, use ½ cup of cheddar instead. You’ll still get the same cheesy flavor, but you will have a recipe with much less calories and fat.

Applesauce

Applesauce is great for baking. Many baked goods such as cakes and brownies call for up to a cup of oil! Since oil is very high in fat and calories, it’s necessary sometimes to substitute it for something more healthy. Luckily, applesauce does the trick. Applesauce can be substituted straight for oil, and your baked goods won’t lose any of their moistness. It will give them a much better flavor, too!

As you can see, you don’t have to cut out your favorite unhealthy foods altogether. Just substitute some of the unhealthy ingredients in the recipes for healthier, more wholesome ingredients like the ones above.
