The Best Ways to Lose Weight and Keep It Off

Tricks and Advice that Actually Work

The Best Ways to Lose Weight and Keep It Off

Have you ever wondered about which is the best way to lose weight? There are hundreds of different diets out there that can help you “lose weight fast,” but most of them are not good for long term weight loss, are extremely unhealthy, or simply don’t work at all. Here we will discuss ways to lose weight that are healthy, and best of all will help you keep off the weight long-term.

Substitution, not elimination

Don’t try to “cut out” food but rather fill your diet with healthy options and alternatives. The best way to lose weight is not to give up all the foods you love. If your vice is sugar, why not try a piece of dark chocolate, which can provide you with antioxidants, and low sugar, versus indulging in an entire snickers bar? If you cut out all of your favorite foods, you will often find yourself binging on all those missed foods, which is worse for your diet. Remember, that you can treat yourself every so often, but keep it minimal and if possible try healthy alternatives to your favorite food. An easy trick is switching one animal product in your diet for a plant-based alternative. Instead of hamburger, have a veggie burger. Instead of a chicken taco, have a black-bean taco. Over time this simple trick really adds up and helps you to lose the weight. It is also easy to substitute fruits and vegetables for other snack foods, and to add them as part of your every day meals to help you lose weight.

The wonders of flax seed

Try introducing flax seed into your daily diet whether putting it in a smoothie, adding it to your oatmeal or cereal or sprinkling onto of your salad. Try starting with about two tablespoons a day. Flax seed is so great because it has a lot of fiber making you full, and keeping you full for a longer amount of time. This will help eliminate the snacking between meals, and also the amount of food that you eat at each meal. It also keeps you body regular and your digestive system working properly.

Drink good beverages

If you’re a huge milk drinker, switch out the dairy milk in your diet to a non-dairy alternative such as soy, almond, hemp or rice milk. Dairy milk has a lot of fat in it, and non-dairy milk eliminates a lot of the unnecessary fat, while still giving our bodies many of the nutrients that milk provides, such as calcium. Cutting out unhealthy fats can be a great way to slim down.

Water is another essential part of a healthy diet. Water helps to flush out bacteria and toxins from your body, and drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day is recommended. You can also drink a glass or two of water right before meals, which will help to fill up your stomach, making you eat less than you otherwise may have.

Some drinks that have caffeine are associated with weight loss. Black coffee only has five calories per serving, so it can be a good drink to add to your breakfast (no adding sugar or cream - that makes it unhealthy). If you aren't a coffee fan, try green tea. It is a mild flavored tea that has a lot of great health benefits due to its high amount of antioxidants.

Plan your meals well

Planning ahead can help you avoid making bad food choices during the day. Make sure that if you will be busy working all day that you bring yourself healthy snacks and a lunch to eat throughout the day. Often times we find ourselves eating less than healthy food because we are hungry and unhealthy snacks are often more accessible and cheaper. Make sure that you also start your day off with breakfast. We often hear it said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and in some cases it just may be. Eating a healthy well-rounded breakfast will kick start your metabolism and digestive system and give you energy to begin the day. It is important, especially if you are trying to lose weight, to kick-start that metabolism in the morning so it can be constantly digesting the food that you eat. It is better to eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day as well so that your digestive system and metabolism are constantly working. This is preferred, and healthier than eating one or two large meals a day. With that diet, your body’s digestive system and metabolism are often lagging most of the day, until they are put into work overload after you consume those one or two big meals.

Get Regular Exercise

This may seem obvious and repeated, but if you want to lose weight there is no way to get around exercising. However, exercise doesn't have to be torture! The key is to find something you love to do. If you don't enjoy running, you will never be able to stick with it. Many gyms have fun and diverse classes like pilates, yoga, step, and more. These are unconventional types of exercise that you should try - you may just end up loving one of them! Once you find the exercise you are passionate about, exercise will seem like a fun hobby instead of something you are forcing yourself to do.

What's more, it's important to integrate exercise into your everyday life. Sure, you can go to the gym for an hour each day, but if you spend the rest of the day on the couch you probably won't be in very good shape. Try to change your habits so that you get a bit more natural exercise every day. Some ways to do this are:

  • Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator
  • Park your car further away in the parking lot
  • Go for a walk for part of your lunch hour
  • Stretch your muscles while sitting at your desk
  • There are plenty of ways to integrate exercise into your day, and I'm sure you can think of more!
