Though it may seem that the new diet “trend” is to cut our carbs, this food group is still one of the most important components of the food we eat to maintain a healthy diet. This group of foods includes sugars, starches and fiber. Not only do you get carbs from grains, but you can also get them in dairy, fruit and veggies. It is still recommended that carbs should make up a little over half of your daily caloric intake. In fact, not eating enough carbohydrates can cause side effects and even complications if this lasts long enough. Some of these side effects may include dizziness, mood swings, nausea, weakness and even depression. Without carbs, your body will produce ketones, which will be present in your saliva and cause you to have bad breathe.

It’s important to note that carbs are the body’s main energy source and every gram of carbs the body consumes has about 4 calories. When you eat a carb, the enzyme amylase, in the body, coverts them into glucose that our body later uses as fuel for energy and to power cellular activity. The brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles all needs carbs in order to function properly. The liver and muscles can even store excess carbs to be used later on.

Along with the important bodily functions carbs aid with, carbs are also a huge source of dietary fiber, which is a indigestible component in carb-containing foods. Fiber helps to keep the body regular and rid it of any toxins. It also helps to lower cholesterol, modulate blood sugar, reduce hemorrhoids and constipation and can even help prevent some types of cancer. It is recommended that a person consume about 14 grams of carbohydrates for every 1,000 calories consumed. Carbs also contain vitamins and phytonutrients.

There are two types of carbohydrates that the body needs to maintain a healthy diet, good weight and strong immune system. First are the simple carbohydrates that are made up of basic sugar. Simple sugars are found in milk, molasses, and fruits, and of course your normal table sugar. Sugar breaks down into glucose immediately after consumption giving the body instant energy to different parts of the body via the blood vessels. Complex carbs can be found in starches and take longer to convert into energy, thereby providing the body with constant energy for a longer amount of time. These complex starches can be found in whole grains, and also refined products. It’s important to avoid these types of refined grains (that lack nutrients and fiber) and ensure that you are only consumed 100% whole grain products.
