While some claim to detoxify your body, or make you lose those few extra pounds, they may actually be doing more harm to your body than good. If you are thinking about starting a cleanse, there are some things you should know first.

Many juice cleanses advertise about rapid weight loss, and you don’t even need to make any other lifestyle changes. Juice cleanses typically involve only consuming fruit and vegetable juices and water lasting from several days to even weeks. While you may actually lose some weight, it tends to be because of the lack of calories you are consuming, not because the juice cleanse contains any rapid fat burning ingredient. Most cleanses require you to only drink liquids, or limit your calories significantly, which contributes to the weight loss. After the cleanse is over, many people report actually gaining back the weight because they resume their normal calorie diet, or are so hungry from eating so few calories that they begin to overeat. While some juice cleanses may give you a diet guide that provides you with enough calories by consuming fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, others are purely liquid diets that deprive your body of the essential calories and nutrients it needs. Since your body is consuming fewer calories than normal, your body may feel fatigued and weak.
