Stay Healthy During Freshman Year of College

Be healthy in your new school environment

Lots of people go to college and put on a ton of weight. It's often called gaining your “freshman fifteen.” But that does not mean that you will gain a lot of weight and be unhealthy during college. Not only will staying healthy in college help you concentrate on schoolwork and feel better, but it also will make you more attractive to the opposite sex. After all, part of the fun of college is going on dates and you wouldn't want to miss out on that!

There are lots of things you can do to stay healthy during college – the two most important things being: exercising and eating well. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy during your freshman year of college.

Eat Like You Would at Home

If you would not eat french fries and other unhealthy foods all the time at home with your family, why would you stuff your face with them at school? It takes some will power, but you will be best served if you avoid the fried foods and other unhealthy items when you are at college.

This means head to the salad bar before loading up your food tray with other foods. But do not drench your salad with dressing – that will turn the salad from something healthy into something really unhealthy. Next, look for foods that are not fried and are loaded with vitamins and nutrients you need. Lastly, allow yourself a dessert at least once a day. This will make eating healthy not feel like such a chore. Plus, if you deny yourself at least one small dessert, you will be less likely to keep eating healthily.

Exercise at Your College Rec Center

College recreation centers have a ton of fun classes, workout machines, and weights. All you need to do is head over there. Even though you are walking all over campus, you could still use some dedicated workout time to burn off those extra calories (especially if you're digging into the waffle fries a little too much). Plus, working out has been proven to put you in a better mood and help you sleep better at night.

So check out the classes offered at the rec center or join a sports league, like kickball, soccer, basketball, or disc golf. You will meet new people and feel a lot healthier by moving around and having fun.

Drink A Lot of Water

The last thing that you can do to stay healthier during your freshman year of college is to stay hydrated. It's easy to forget about drinking water or other liquids when you are studying or in class, but water can help you with focusing on your studies. Also, water helps distribute vital nutrients throughout your body and can help you fight off infections. Hydration is a really important component to staying healthy.

Know Where Your Health Center Is

At home, your parents probably took care of your health and took you to a doctor when you needed it. At college, you are in charge of going to the doctor when you feel sick. It is best that you know where the school doctors are and how to contact them ahead of time. Nothing is worse than being sick and not knowing what to do about it.

With these tips, you are ready to take on your freshman year of college in a healthy way!
