We have all heard the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."  Considering how many good nutrients and benefits are in this fruit, this is true.  Apples are a great, convenient snack to incorporate in to the diets of both adults and children - although kids can be picky eaters in some cases, most kids will eat an apple that has the skin cut off.  They are a good source of dietary fiber and are high in vitamin C, and are free of fat and saturated fat.  They are also low in calories – a normal apple has somewhere between 50 and 90 calories.  Apples are also a good source of water.  Since most fruits are mostly water, this makes them a good source of fluid.  Lastly, they are a great source of antioxidants for your body, and they can help you build stronger bones and also help with asthma.

Like most fruits, apples are somewhat high in sugar - the sugar is where the calories come from.  It would be detrimental to your diet to eat too many, because excess sugar and calories contribute to weight gain.  Apples also are somewhat high in carbohydrates - this is due to their somewhat high sugar content.

    Homemade Apple Sauce

  • 6 cups apples, cored and diced
  • ¾ cup water
  • dash of lemon juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ – ½ cup sugar
  • In a medium pot, put in apples, water, lemon juice and cinnamon. Bring to a boil and turn down the heat to low. Let simmer for 10 minutes with the pot covered. Add in the sugar and let simmer again for 5 minutes. Simmer longer if they don't soften.



    Turkey, Cheddar and Apple Sandwich

  • 2 teaspoons mustard
  • 2 slices bread, toasted
  • 2 teaspoons mayonnaise (omit to reduce calories)
  • 4 thin slices of cooked turkey
  • 1 ounce of cheddar, thinly sliced
  • 4 thin slices of apple
  • 2 pieces lettuce
  • Spread the mustard on one side of the toasted bread and put the mayo on the other side. Layer the turkey, cheddar, apple and lettuce on one side of the bread. Top with the other piece of bread and you're set to get eating!



    Apple Crumble

    Apple Filling:

  • 4 large apples (should be about 3 pounds), peeled, cored and sliced
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 lemon, juiced, or about ¼ cup of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Topping:

  • 1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¼ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • dash of salt
  • 1 stick cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease your 9x13 inch pan. Mix apples with sugar, lemon juice, flour and cinnamon. Spread mixture into pan.

    Then, mix together nuts, flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Use a pastry cutter to work in the cold butter. Spread filling on top of apples and bake until topping is golden brown, about 45 minutes.
